Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the relationship between communication styles, empathy, and intergenerational relationship quality among Generation Z and Millennials in Pakistan. A correlational research design was employed, and data were collected from N=200 participants using standardized measures of communication styles, empathy, and intergenerational relationship quality. The sample included individuals from Generation Z and Millennials to explore differences in relationship patterns across generations. Pearson product-moment correlation, independent samples t-test, multiple linear regression, and one-way ANOVA were conducted for data analysis. Results revealed a significant positive relationship between empathy and intergenerational relationship quality, indicating that higher empathetic abilities were associated with stronger family relationships. Communication styles also demonstrated a significant positive association with relationship quality, while verbal aggressiveness showed a negative relationship. Multiple regression analysis indicated that both communication styles and empathy significantly predicted intergenerational relationship quality, collectively explaining a substantial proportion of variance. Furthermore, significant differences were observed between Generation Z and Millennials, with Millennials reporting higher intergenerational relationship quality compared to Generation Z. Age-based differences also indicated variations in relationship quality, with older participants demonstrating stronger emotional and supportive connections with family members. The findings highlight the importance of empathetic understanding and effective communication in strengthening relationships between generations. The study contributes to understanding intergenerational dynamics within the Pakistani cultural context and suggests that promoting positive communication skills and empathy may help reduce generational gaps and enhance family relationships.
